Using an everyday action to generate energy is the latest high-profile PR stunt from the company Iberdrola.
At the Miromesnil subway station, turnstile bars were 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀. 🍃
In collaboration with the agency Weber Shandwick Paris, Iberdrola wanted to raise awareness among Parisian subway users about green energy production. ⚡
The brand's message: “All around us, there is wasted, clean energy that can be harnessed.” Jean Paoli, Director of Strategy and Creation, Weber Shandwick Paris.
Conceived by engineering students, the device is eco-designed, and the system powers the awareness screens installed in the station during the campaign.
« If we rolled out these turnstiles across the entire Paris subway system, they could generate about 150 MWh in one year—enough to power the electric heating for 4 households for about 10 years » Vincent Hongre, Engineering Student, Junia HEI.

France among the 3 worst performers:
On average, a train ticket 🚆 costs 2.6 times more than a plane ticket ✈️ within France (Greenpeace study, July 2023).
➡️ This puts France on the podium for the worst performers in Europe in this area.
In 2019, the most traveled air route in the entire European Union (3.2 million people) was Toulouse-Paris.
Yet, there are over 10 daily train connections between these two cities 😱
The main reason travelers choose to fly: price 💰
On this route, flying was the cheapest option for 6 out of the 9 days analyzed (Greenpeace). Trains were on average 19% more expensive than flights for this trip.
If this flight route were eliminated, 244,000 tons of greenhouse gases would be saved (equivalent to the annual emissions of 163,000 cars).
This isn't the only route where flying is cheaper than taking the train. On the Paris-Milan line, which saw 2.1 million passengers in 2019, the train is more expensive 90% of the time.
Why is there such a price difference? 🤔
The gap is mainly due to these two factors:
- Jet fuel is one of the few fuels that isn't taxed. It is exempt from the European Energy Taxation Directive.
- A 0% VAT rate on international flight tickets.

The entire Altopi team took part in the "2 Tonnes" workshop to assess and identify concrete steps to reduce our CO2 emissions, both individually and collectively.
At the start of the workshop, we averaged 5.97 tCO2e per person per year, and we managed to get that down to 2.08 tCO2e by 2050! Challenge accepted and won 💪
The Paris Agreement set a goal: to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C by the end of the century.
To reach this goal, we must reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to 2 tons of CO2 equivalent per person per year by 2050. (Currently, the average in France is 9.5 tCO2e per year.)
Designing products responsibly means limiting your business's environmental impact. Manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and increasing product durability are essential to reducing your footprint. 🌼
