Champagne Wine Cooperative

L'entreprise

Covama is a wine cooperative in the Marne Valley, owner of the Pannier, Jacquart, and Montaudon brands. Covama produces over 4 million bottles of champagne annually. In terms of CSR, the cooperative is already committed to concrete sustainability and transition initiatives (insulation, avoiding oil and gas, installing solar panels, and reducing water consumption).

Quels étaient les enjeux ?

Aware of resource scarcity and driven by its employees and customers, Covama first undertook an analysis of its CSR maturity and greenhouse gas emissions through a CSR Diagnostic and a Carbon Footprint assessment (conducted with Altopi).
‍

Covama has already implemented numerous actions that demonstrate its commitment: insulation, refusing to use oil or gas, installing solar panels, reducing water consumption, and more.
‍

The wine company is now looking to continue and intensify its efforts and obtain B Corp certification.
‍

Covama therefore wanted to create its double materiality matrix to study its impact on the environment, as well as the environment's impact on the company, in order to assess major risks and develop an impactful action plan based on these analyses.

Quelles actions ont été mises en place avec Altopi pour répondre à ces enjeux ?

Covama was supported by Nicolas and Eva from our team to develop their double materiality matrix.

  1. Value chain analysis
    • Mapping of activities, key flows, and main stakeholders.
    • Identification of impact and exposure areas (upstream, operations, downstream).
      ‍
  2. Identification of CSR issues related to the sector and the company
    • Inventory of potential issues, taking into account the specificities of the wine sector.
    • Selection of the most relevant issues for COVAMA's business.
      ‍
  3. IRO analysis (Impacts, Risks, Opportunities)
    • For each issue, qualification of potential impacts and effects.
    • Analysis of associated risks and opportunities (operational, economic, reputational, etc.).
      ‍
  4. Evaluation and prioritization via the double materiality matrix
    • Positioning of issues along two axes:
      • Impact materiality (impact of the activity on the environment and society)
      • Financial materiality (impact of issues on the company's performance and resilience)
        ‍
    • Highlighting "priority" issues to guide the action plan.

‍

Quels sont les résultats observés ?

Thanks to this double materiality matrix, Covama now has:

  • A precise understanding of material issues related to its business, i.e., the major risks and impacts incurred in relation to its environment and social justice
  • A management tool to prioritize the most useful and impactful actions and mitigate these risks
  • A robust foundation to continue structuring its CSR approach, including with a view to certification.
