When upcycling becomes a competitive advantage: AB Technologies

AB Technologies (Morbihan, ~€35M revenue) manufactures innovative cheese products by repurposing dairy scraps and unsold goods from the industry. With From'Up, their hybrid product incorporating upcycled materials, they had a strong "circular economy" positioning—but lacked quantified proof.
Their goal: to robustly measure the environmental benefit of From'Up in order to have reliable indicators for comparing scenarios, guiding eco-design choices (packaging, logistics), and framing associated communications.

We proposed conducting an ISO 14067 LCA, which transforms a "circular economy" position into actionable proof: traceable results, structured comparisons, and secure commercial messaging.
The ISO 14067-compliant carbon Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), aligned with the "Dairy Products" PEFCR sector standard, was carried out in four stages:
- Carbon footprint calculation (5.15 kgCO₂e / kg of sliced From'Up) and comparison with the reference product (~−17% vs. standard emmental) → a measurable competitive advantage
- Assessment of avoided carbon emissions (−4.12 kgCO₂e per kg of From'Up) compared to a standard emmental production scenario
- Identified hotspots (raw materials, packaging, cold chain transport) → an immediately actionable eco-design roadmap
- Standardized and defensible arguments: every figure is traceable, every assumption is documented
Beyond the requested quantification, the study unlocked concrete eco-design levers (packaging and logistics optimization) and laid the foundation for credible, long-term environmental communication.
